He wandered from job to job and from home to home until he got sober

I was a teenager in the post war years. It was a time of "block parties" and celebrating the return to normalcy. "Let's drink some beer," a friend suggested one day. We did. I got drunk and woozy. The room was spinning and when I went to bed. But despite all that, the voice within me said, "Grab your coat. We are off to the races."
