Look it up

When I was new in sobriety, I’d go to my sponsor with the burning question of the day and he’d listen patiently and say, “What does the Big Book say about that?” I’d look at him dumbfounded and think, You’re the sponsor, you’re supposed to tell me what the book says! Then he’d smile patiently and say, “Go look it up.” And of course, he never knew where it was in the book. With my keen alcoholic mind, it took me months to realize he was getting me to read the Big Book.
