Losing his hearing, he had to recharge his sobriety
Right around the time I got sober, when I was 38, I lost hearing in my left ear. The hearing in my right ear was good, so it wasn't too disabling. Noisy rooms were more difficult, but I had traded barrooms for church basements, where people mostly spoke one at a time!
