Perfect timing

An old-timer learns about God’s care through AA and the creatures in his garden

I got sober in 1964, when I was 29 years old, and have remained sober since that time. When I was new in sobriety, in addition to attending many meetings, one of the first things I got involved in was gardening. I don’t recall anyone saying I had a “green thumb,” but I spent a lot of time moving dirt and seeds around. One time, in my wisdom, I decided to leave the green beans one more day before harvesting them. When I returned to the garden, I had—as AA members would say—a learning experience: rabbits, woodchucks, you name it, had chosen to not wait for the next day and did the harvesting on their own. So no green beans for me. I learned that timing is invaluable, and that I must take each day as it comes.
