Sometimes the decisions we make have everything to do with drinking

I don’t recall when I took my first drink, but it was always available in our house when I was growing up. I used to have Tom & Jerry drinks at Christmas and hot toddies for colds. I liked alcohol a lot. I even named my kitten Whiskey. I didn’t feel a sense of belonging within my family, religion or school. I went through the motions of pretending to get by, while feeling desperate for attention inside. But when I finally got the attention I sought, I didn’t really know what to do with it. I just felt shy and uncomfortable. Oh boy, did alcohol ever fix that self-consciousness. I didn’t have to care anymore.
