On a remote Alaska road, he got a big scare that turned out to be HP’s Thanksgiving gift

I was two years sober and nearly everything in my personal life had changed, though not necessarily for the better. The major changes at two years sober had left me vulnerable, as I struggled to adjust to being divorced and living in the small remote Alaska community that I had moved to for a new job. There was only one AA meeting a week in that tiny town—the only meeting within 110 miles—and I was the only one attending it. So on the weekends, I would drive the nearly 200 miles to Anchorage to go to as many AA meetings as I could.
