Breakdown, 3 A.M.

A newcomer gets busy making sober friends online, until one night in D.C. it really pays off

For as long as I can remember, I never drank the same as everyone else. Growing up, I was very shy and had very low self-esteem. I used alcohol to come out of my shell; it made the anxiety of socializing so much easier for me. I’d start drinking well before any social outing in order for the feeling to hit me and then, when I got to the event, I’d continue to drink and drink and drink to the point where I was completely wasted, obnoxious, and out of control.
