Bumpy decision

A sober doctor learns that finding just the right sponsor can be a contact sport

I was born into a lower middle-class family already knowing that something was awry. I came into the world against my will, after my mother labored long and hard. I knew from the beginning that life was never going to be easier than it had been up to that moment. As I grew older, this became more apparent. I attended different schools for 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th and 7th grades, until my parents agreed to let me stay put. Being uprooted so frequently led to major delays in my ability to form stable friendships with others.
