Staying sober on a rum-filled ship can be rough. But with her sponsor as her lighthouse, she’s doing it

Nine months ago, I left the U.S. and the comfort and safety of my well-established AA community and moved onto the sailing vessel “Chillmore.” Naturally, I was concerned about how I would remain sober amidst the isolation and the rum-drinking sailing community. The drunken sailor may be a stereotype, but it is true that sailors do drink a lot of rum.
