A fire destroyed everything she owned—but not her desire to stay sober

I was a closet-drinking housewife who came into AA in a last-chance effort to save my marriage. It had been two years since I had hit my bottom. During those two years, my husband and my therapist had been encouraging and pleading with me to try AA. I bitterly and angrily resisted them and for two years tried to quit drinking on my own, only to drink again and again. It was two years of lying, hiding and denying. I had prayed to God to help me and he left my prayers unanswered, or so I thought.
