I'm Doing the Best I Can

Years ago when I was still drinking, I had a routine medical test that produced questionable results. My doctor said a biopsy would tell us if the condition was pre-cancerous and require cryosurgery. When the biopsy was done, it was what he thought it might be. All I remember hearing from him was "cancer" and "surgery." My boyfriend and I had recently ended our relationship, but remained friends. I asked him to meet me, and over drinks I explained (rather dramatically) that it was just as well that we had broken up, because I was dying of cancer.
