The Last Candle

His daughter got an award that night, but he got an even better one

I was sitting in the principal’s office at the high school of a young man who was coming up for sentencing for vandalism. I was a probation officer, and this was in upstate New York. The principal and the student’s teacher were answering my questions and I was writing down notes, but we all knew my mind was elsewhere. This guy must be nuts, I assumed they were thinking.
