Drinking weakened his home’s foundation but sobriety made it tall and strong

During my marriage, I succumbed time and time again to drink. I had flirted with recovery before and during the marriage, but had yet to truly believe what I now know about alcoholism—that I was powerless and my life was unmanageable. Nonetheless, I had at the time a job that seemed on the surface to be part of a successful career, albeit one whose foundation had long ago been undermined by cracks.
