Happily Buzzing

It was a sparkling spring day in May, perfect for puttering in the yard. I had left the back door open as I carried some tools and materials from the house, and upon re-entry, I noticed an unusual buzzing noise. A large insect perhaps, but as I followed the sound, I spotted a hummingbird high up on a transom window. It was tracing a noisy path back and forth, back and forth across the window in a manic and vain attempt to find an escape to the outside world. Surely, if I did not intervene, it would die of sheer anxiety and exhaustion. But how?
