Mother's Day

A once-drunken daughter takes her mom a special gift and ends up getting one herself

I discovered alcohol—and its power to ease the terror I felt about becoming an adult—when I was 20. Still living at home, my burgeoning career as an alcoholic tested the already fragile relationship I had with my mom. Most of our interaction in the early years of my 20s took place in the middle of the night, when I stumbled into the house drunk and pretended unconvincingly that I was sober.
