Our Protective Mantle

AA provides us a warm tent of anonymity to discuss our drinking—when we’re ready

My thoughts about anonymity have usually emphasized its therapeutic value in controlling such psychological handicaps as egotism and greed. I have occasionally been surprised to find that in the minds of many members of Alcoholics Anonymous the chief function of anonymity—nay, its only purpose—is to conceal and protect its members. If I am reasonably sure that they will not broadcast the information to the media in violation of our Traditions, I have told the people I mingle with frequently that I belong to Alcoholics Anonymous.
