My older sister Julie was my protector growing up. She was only twenty months older but she protected me, whenever she could, from the cruelties of our alcoholic household. She also introduced me to drinking and we spent our teens and twenties looking after each other – driving when the other was too drunk, filling in the details after a blackout. We both ended up going through treatment. She decided A.A. was not for her but she always supported my decision to get sober and even after she moved across the country she always got a card to me on my A.A. anniversary.
