Smoke Shop

Her first sober job was in a place where they sold cigarettes and paraphernalia, yet she was grateful for the daily reminder of the lonely life she had left behind

So like most people coming in to the rooms, I was jobless and broke. The only employment I could find was at a smoke shop being a salesperson for cigarettes and crack pipes. Even getting the job was a God shot, because one of my friends from my local AA club walked in during the middle of my interview. The interview was literally held in the middle of the store; my friend knew I had been looking for a job and shouted: “You should hire her, you won’t regret it!” Turns out, that worked. I was hired on the spot and told to start Monday. About one month into this new job someone from the Fellowship (I never found out who) broke my anonymity and my boss confronted me and wanted to fire me for not telling him I was an alcoholic. I was able to convince him to give me a chance and that I was trying to change my life for the better. Walking out of that store after my shift, I don’t think I have ever been so upset. I went to the only person I could think of who would know what to do.
