Off to the races

He loved racing. He also loved liquor. Now that he was sober, would he have to hit the brakes?

My father started racing stock cars at a dirt track on the south side of Baltimore when I was just 3 years old. I immediately fell in love with the sport. Dad started out in the hobby division, which meant racing old jalopies with roll bars. Watching him race was a thrill even though his car was not nearly as fast as the top-division cars driven by the likes of Frankie Schneider and Johnny Roberts.
