Two Gifts

The first sound he heard, shuffling down the hall of the detox in pajamas and paper slippers, was laughter. But where could it be coming from?

There I was sitting on the floor of my small studio apartment with a bottle of wine, crying my heart out. At 40 years old, alcohol had stolen everything from me. Ten years before, I had had a family of four, a beautiful home in the suburbs, two cars, a vice presidency in a major advertising company, a corner office, a parking space with my name on it and inheritance money to top it all off.
