Emotional Sobriety

THE writer of “Wonderfully Humbling” got sober in his 50s and has been in AA now 28 years. He’s retired and loves to sit in his backyard, which he calls his “green cathedral.” There, he taps into the “incredible serenity” around him. “When the lawn mowers and weedwackers move on,” he writes, “I get a small window for a one-sided conversation with my Higher Power.” He calls some of these moments “wonderfully humbling.”
