One day, on a beautiful cliff in Spain, she had an encounter that broke her free of a resentment she’d been living with for years

When I first learned of the Fourth Step, I said, “You have got to be kidding me!” I thought no good could come of bringing up all that stuff from the past. I would say, “If I did a Fourth, I would drink a fifth.” Even though I was joking, I knew my shame was really talking. At the time I was harboring many resentments from a painful alcoholic childhood. And now I knew I had to dredge up those memories and situations in order to heal. One was about my grandfather.
