She thought she was a “happy” drunk, but it was only after getting sober that she found spirituality and, ultimately, real happiness

When I was around 13 years old, my parents and my older brother and I went to an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean. My brother and I dropped off our bags in our room and went down to the pool. Right next to the pool was a very nice bar. My brother said to me: “Just do what I do.” So I followed him up to the bar and he said: “I’ll have a rum and coke, please.” So I said: “I’ll have a rum and coke, please.” A few minutes later, after we sloshed down the drinks, he went back up to the bar and said: “I’ll have a double rum and coke, please.” Naturally, I followed suit. And so it went.
