When I sobered up in January 1977, I was at a point of desperation only other alcoholics can comprehend. I hated myself for all the pain I had inflicted on everyone around me and for how I had become the very person I despised. I knew I would die (very soon) if I didn't stop drinking. By the grace of God, my willingness to do anything, to go to any lengths to stay sober, surpassed my overwhelming fear of facing life without a drink.
