Rebellion, stubborn, exhausted by self-will, she finally glimpsed the truth behind the excuses she made for her habitual drinking

Why was my roommate holding my hair as I was throwing up in the toilet? Why was she talking to me as I gasped for air and tried not to throw up more? I heard her tell me that one of her ex-husbands was an alcoholic. Was she saying that I was an alcoholic? She informed me that I had passed out on the waterbed after drinking at a club called Safaris that night. Blacking out on parts of my evening couldn’t be happening, I thought, because I controlled what bars I drank in, the people I hung with, the money I spent. I was in control!
