The Reunion

He’d been drinking all his life, but when his children threatened to boycott the family reunion he understood how serious his problem was

It began in a hospital waiting room, where my children and I were taking a break from being with our wife/mother, who was facing some physical challenges.  Conversation ebbed when one of my children said: “Dad, we have something to talk to you about.  We are very concerned about your drinking.”  Another said: “We’ve asked you to stop drinking but you haven’t stopped.  You may need to enter a rehab facility.”  Then the last child spoke: “Dad, our family is not coming to the family reunion this weekend.”
