A Grateful Heart

Nearly 30 years later, a grateful alcoholic reflects on the experience of getting sober young

Getting sober young doesn't make my journey in sobriety or my experiences unique. In fact, young or old, we likely share in most all of the same emotions and setbacks. As a young teen, I wasn't spared from pain, nor have I been spared from pain in my recovery. I experienced tragedy, the inability to decipher the true from false, as I lived for the next drink. The symptoms of a young alcoholic were apparent early, but neither I nor those nearest to me understood this disease or the solution. Normal high school boys aren't kicked off of a sports team for drinking and hospitalized for internal bleeding, nor do they total cars, falsely testify with insurance companies, or get arrested for being under the influence.
