Social Workers Do Not Drive Porsches

For over 20 years, I was what many would consider a high-functioning alcoholic, although not everyone knew I was drinking to the point of passing out nearly daily. Those who witnessed my drunkenness often brushed it off as: “He needed to let off steam.” Or: “He was just letting loose.” I somehow managed to earn multiple graduate degrees and create a successful career despite my growing alcoholism. The successful career and obsessive drinking came to a crossroads, however, and the reality of my life needed a drastic change.
