He’d had three chances to stop drinking—and now, on a snowy highway, he faced his fourth

2013 was a tumultuous year for me. In February, during a routine medical physical, my doctors became perplexed by my condition. I had lied, as I had done so in the past, about my weekly alcohol intake. This lie left the doctors in the dark as to why my blood tests were coming back with elevated liver enzymes and other blood markers indicating liver disease or blood cancer. After several more blood tests I finally became honest with my medical team about my drinking. They immediately suggested I had a severe issue with alcohol consumption and should seek help through Alcoholics Anonymous.
