New to Sobriety—and Trying to Stay Alive

Struggling with illness and a loved one who drinks, she finds faith in AA

As I watch him finish his seventh beer and fifth shot of whiskey, my mind focuses on my newfound sobriety. Living with someone you love that still drinks alcohol makes it difficult to stay sober. I am feeling good and finally able to eat food and enjoy life every day, but the smell of the alcohol gets to me like the aroma of steak cooking. I fight the urge to drink by cleaning the house or writing in my journal. Many times I will sit and read my AA materials, including the stories in Grapevine. I am not sure when the urge of drinking will completely go away, maybe never. I do know that alcohol is an allergy to my body. I don’t tolerate drinking like other people.
