Dear Grapevine

The best pizza

I was fresh out of rehab with six months sober. I got a job delivering pizza in my hometown at the age of 40, which was embarrassing. Also, my little car had been in a hailstorm and it had a hundred dents in it. I didn’t feel too good about that either. I told my AA friend about my new job and he said, “That’s good honest work.” It just didn’t dawn on me what he meant.

One day, I had to deliver a pizza to an old friend’s house who had done really well for himself. I was dreading going over there. I was full of crippling fear. So much that I almost quit the job. On the way over I asked God for help.

When I arrived, I got out of my car, totally embarrassed, and I heard a voice say, “Pick your head up.” So I did. Then it said, “Smile,” so I did. Then the voice said, “You are right where you need to be.”

Right then it hit me: My life was way better off now than when I was drinking. I walked up and knocked on my friend’s door. He opened it, looked at me, then looked at my car and said, “How are you?” in a concerned way. With a big smile I said, “I’m so much better now!”
