Inside or outside of prison, the common denominator is one alcoholic helping another

I’ve been a member of the same home group for the entire 13 years of my sobriety. I meet my sponsor at my second meeting and I had a service role by my sixth week of sobriety. My sponsor had me involved early as she firmly believes that service is a key part of the program. Lucky for me she encouraged participation in the quarterly workshop our home group takes to the local women’s prison once I had a year’s sobriety - which is our requirement for this service. She explained that a group of a dozen of our home group female members would visit the prison, spend the day and discuss the twelve steps during an eight-hour retreat.
