From the Streets to the Rooms

Homeless and at her first AA meeting, she was hoping to get kicked out—until she read the Steps on the wall…

I first came into the rooms at the very beginning of 2009. I will never forget my first meeting. I was so convinced that AA was some sort of cult. A collection of religious zealots bent on converting the downtrodden alcoholic. I knew for certain that I would be kicked out or asked not to return. But I went anyway in support of a girl who lived in a shelter with me. I remember immediately reading the Steps on the wall and looking for my way out. Either you would kick me out or I would find contention with some aspect of your Fellowship and leave! How rich is that—me an alcoholic woman who had spent years living on the streets would find a way to insult your group and depart in an indignant huff, never to return!
