Our job is to remember the past, learn from it—but don’t repeat it

By the time I was emerging into young adulthood, I was already a runaway. I was raised in a broken home and a dysfunctional family. Sometimes life deals you a bad hand. It’s left up to you to break the pattern, make the best of it, and work it out. One of my many character defects was escapism. I would pull “geographics” so I wouldn’t face my realities. I found that problems followed me around like luggage until I rectified them.
