When I came into Alcoholics Anonymous over forty years ago my first sponsor, who got sober when AA was twenty-two years old, said that the best three words to say to a newcomer were “meetings, meetings, meetings.” As a result of his belief in the value of meetings for newcomers, I went to fifteen meetings a week for the first year of my sobriety. From that experience of getting sober, and from the experience of being among literally tens of thousands of alcoholics trying to get and stay sober during these past four decades, I am a great believer in meeting attendance as part of a strong foundation for sobriety.
