Doing Time on the Chain Gang
My life prior to prison was entirely normal. Normal for a functioning alcoholic, that is. I suffered the usual blackouts, hangovers and arguments with the family about my excessive drinking. Never arrested, no jail time, not even a speeding ticket! Then this disease we call alcoholism finally caught up with me for actions committed while drinking. Standing in front of the judge and being sentenced to 95 months in prison my legs almost buckled. How could a fine upstanding, middle class, middle-aged man be put in real prison, with the real criminals?
