He commanded a powerful Navy vessel, but he was powerless over his alcoholism

I don’t think that many folks in my past would have predicted that I would become an alcoholic. I came from a very small and religious family – my parents did not drink, their friends did not drink and there wasn’t any booze around for me to experiment with. Though my upbringing wasn’t what you would have called strict, there was a clear sense of right and wrong, and it was made known to me that in my family drinking was wrong.
