Truly Blessed

Reflecting on the changes wrought by nearly 40 years of sobriety

I grew up in a small town in the anthracite coal region of central Pennsylvania during the 50s and 60s. I was the youngest of three boys and both our parents worked. While neither of my parents were alcoholics, I learned at an early age that alcoholism ran on both sides of the family and seem to recall it was talked about as a disease. I grew up feeling unloved and as if I did not belong even in my own family. There was this hole in my soul and to this day I am not quite sure where it came from in the first place.
