An unexpected call

An unexpected call

My phone rang at 3 in the morning. The voice on the other end was crying.
It was my father. Seventy-two hours later, I was in my parents’ home.

I recall how years ago I was contacted by the Catholic Diocese of St. Cloud. I was shocked that the bishop’s office would reach out to me, but indeed they did. I was asked by the voice on the phone to hold for the bishop and then, to my surprise, the bishop came to the phone. He explained how he had heard that I was willing to help people with alcoholism. He said he had a young seminarian he was concerned about. He wondered if I would take this man to an AA meeting. “Yes, absolutely,” I replied.
