An atheist depends on a “Holy Trinity” of Higher Powers to stay sober

A few days before my birthday in December 2012, I woke up at around 3 AM and came to believe that the people that I cared about would be better off if I was dead. I then started to ponder what would be the best way to kill myself so that I could not be revived (like smashing my car into a bridge support). Then my little mutt dog jumped onto the bed and licked my hand. I started to cry and grabbed her and held her close. I thought: “At least my dog still loves me.”
