Fearful at first, he helped an inmate find a life outside of prison—and discovered they shared more than he had thought possible

I didn’t know what I was getting into when I signed on to take a meeting to my local county jail. I had been a speaker at the Wednesday night group before, but now it was my turn to chair the meeting and bring in the speakers. I had heard from others in AA that the guys in jail were an unusually hard and stubborn lot, rarely coming into recovery because of the high rates of recidivism and historical familial cycles of incarceration. I put the thought aside and arranged for speakers to come with me to the meeting.
