Calvin’s Prayer
I heard two things that night: “Come back” and “Pray, if you can.” I knew I was in a fix. But desperation led me to say this prayer anyway.
I returned from Vietnam in 1967 on a medical evacuation flight to Travis Air Force Base in Northern California. After two months of hospitalization, I sat with a psychiatrist who asked, “Calvin, don’t you want to go home?” All these years later, I realized that being in that hospital was the first time I had ever really felt safe.
