My Favorite Service Commitment

Taking on service commitments kept him sober. Nearly 40 years later, it still does

When I got sober in 1983, I was encouraged by my sponsor to not pick up, one day at a time, but also to show up for life daily. Like others new to the program, I was encouraged to take on any service opportunities as they came up, in any of the meetings I attended. I did this beginning with washing coffee cups at my Men's Stag, setting up and taking down chairs, being a greeter at the door. It was great. I truly felt more and more engaged in my recovery. I was involved in the program and relaxed in those meetings as I grew to laugh, get to know others and feel the energy and newfound joy of recovery from alcoholism.
