I met Lu when I moved to San Antonio. I was about two years sober. The fact that Lu was from California motivated me to ask her to be my sponsor because I knew that she’d understand why I longed to return to my birth state. But Lu said that I could return to California only when I was able to say, “My name is Cathy, I’m an alcoholic—and I’m visiting from Texas.” This was a tall order for me, but Lu did agree to be my sponsor and through her, I met Renee.
