I was told rather forcefully by my sponsor that I should celebrate for the newcomer—not myself. I finally agreed to go.
It was March, and I was cold, lonely, confused and terrified. I was sure that this was it for me. It was 7:30 a.m., and I somehow crawled out of the car drunk and made it into the house. My wife and daughters were surprised that I even made it home at all. They had been calling the hospitals and precincts where they thought I might be.
