Half a century later, a young people’s meeting brings back his first moment in AA

While I was attending church on January 6, 1972, the Army chaplain, in front of the entire congregation, and looking me dead in the eye, stated that if anyone in the congregation had a problem with alcohol, he would like to speak to that person after the service. While he was shaking hands at the front door, I left my wife and children in the church and headed out the back door— to go get drunk. Walking into my office Monday morning, I saw the chaplain standing at my office door. Monday mornings and an officer waiting for me had always added up to trouble, but on this Monday in 1972 it was a different story.
