At Long Last

Despite certain knowledge that he was an alcoholic, he kept drinking for 30 years. AA freed him

I knew was an alcoholic since my mid-30s. Through my medical training I had seen death from liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis, alcoholic heart disease [myopathy] and DTs. But these things would never happen to me. So I went on my merry way, consuming ever-increasing amounts of alcohol, smug in my ability to conceal these volumes from family, friends and co-workers. The game of hide and seek was challenging but necessary to keep my shell of dignity intact.
