Picking up the pieces

Her drinking drove her to unspeakable loss, yet she found comfort and forgiveness with the help of AA

My life changed forever on a March evening in 2008. After having dinner and drinks to celebrate my mother-in-law’s birthday, I drove drunk with my twin daughters, who were age 8 at the time. I was reaching for a cigarette lighter, speeding and driving into a curve. Looking up, I realized that I was over the center line. I over-corrected and slammed into a utility pole at 50 mph. One of my girls died instantly. Three ambulances left the scene of that fatal crash. That was my picture of unmanageability.
