The Kinship of Common Suffering

A moving and thoughtful meditation on one man’s Higher Power

My bottom occurred in a holding cell after a bar fight. Afterwards, I learned that I had struck a man with a pint glass, endangering his eye. I came to AA straight from central booking because sobriety was my only hope of avoiding prison. I detoxed in the rooms. When I recovered sufficiently, I heard that I had to believe that a Power greater than myself could restore me to sanity. At some level this made sense. But on the wall Step Two capitalized the word "Power." Step 3 made it clear that "Power" meant God. More than one person told me that I had to make God my Higher Power and turn my will and life over to him.
