Ready to Handle it

I drank for 46 years. During those first few years, drinking was really fun and gave me a sense of belonging and made me feel accepted by my peers. I had several negative events due to drinking—frequent blackouts, DUIs, job loss—but all of these occurrences I justified as unfortunate incidents. Almost always, it was someone else’s fault; I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time; people were out to get me. I was totally unaware of my role in these problems.
